Net metering lets you export unused solar power back to the grid for bill credits. It requires a formal application with your electric utility — including a facility inspection and a bi-directional meter install — and typically takes 2–4 months to complete. Your system starts working as soon as it's commissioned. Net metering only affects the credit for surplus power you export — it isn't something you wait for before the system runs.
